The Green Choice Program is an opportunity for Burbank Water and Power residential customers to personally engage with renewable energy. Burbank Water and Power will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to offset the energy usage of customer’s who opt-in to the program.

A Renewable Energy Credit (also known as a Renewable Energy Certificate) is what is used to identify energy as renewable energy, and represents the renewable attributes of that energy. When renewable energy is produced, it also produces Renewable Energy Credits. These credits can be used to offset non-renewable energy.

The Renewable Energy Credits purchased through the program encourage additional renewable energy to be created, and also guarantee that the renewable energy is transmitted to California’s grid. This is achieved by only purchasing Renewable Energy Credits that have the requirement that the energy that produced the Renewable Energy Credit is delivered to California power grid.

You are not guaranteed to receive more renewable energy through this program. What is guaranteed is that 100% of your non-renewable energy is offset by Renewable Energy Credits. Your participation can increase the total amount of renewable energy on California’s grid, but not the amount of renewable energy that Burbank Water and Power delivers to you. This means that you have encouraged additional creation of renewable energy that is delivered to or created in California.

The cost of participation is 1.8 cents per kWh. For most residential customers, this will be $10 or less per month on top of your existing electric bill.

You can opt-in to the Green Choice Program by filling out an application before the end of the current enrollment period of March 31, 2021. Customers who opt-in between now and March 31, 2023, will be placed on the Green Choice Program rate two to three business days following the date the application was submitted.

Your commitment to the program will be for the entire duration of the program during that calendar year.
