Strengthening Burbank's Electric Grid in the Tier 2 High Fire Threat District

BWP will be upgrading the electric infrastructure in the Tier 2 High Fire Threat District (Tier 2 HFTD) to improve wildfire safety and strengthen Burbank’s electric grid.

Fully upgrading the electric infrastructure in Burbank’s Tier 2 HFTD to help mitigate wildfires is a big initiative. BWP will be performing a series of projects to upgrade Burbank’s infrastructure one area at a time. BWP will focus on areas that are closest to the hillside areas that pose accessibility challenges to BWP crews.

These upgrades will help ensure that Burbank will continue to have reliable, high-quality electric service for years to come.

Solar + Battery Project at the Regional Intermodal Transportation Center (RITC)

We’re partnering with Hollywood Burbank Airport and Baker Electric to build a 2 megawatt solar system with battery storage. The project will provide enough power for about 585 homes. Construction on the RITC Solar + Battery Project officially began in July 2025, marking a major milestone in Burbank’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable future. Over the coming months, crews will install more than 4,000 solar panels and an advanced battery storage system. The construction phase is anticipated to be completed by May 2026, and will begin delivering zero-carbon power to the Burbank community.

Construction on Front Street, Magnolia Boulevard, and Varney Street

Burbank Water and Power (BWP) will be installing a tunnel bore under the railroad to support new electric lines associated with the Front Street development. There will be intermittent southbound lane closures on Front Street. Daytime flaggers will direct traffic around the closure (including stopping northbound traffic as needed to allow southbound traffic through). Front Street will be one-way traffic with flaggers during the day (intermittently) from January 26 with an end date to be determined.

Reservoir 4 and 5 Stair Replacement Project

BWP is replacing the stairs at Water Reservoirs 4 and 5 as a safety improvement. The new stairs will allow crews to safely access the reservoirs for routine inspections and maintenance. The stair replacements will be completed one reservoir at a time. Reservoir 5 will be completed first, followed by Reservoir 4. The project will take approximately 4-6 weeks per reservoir. The project is estimated to be completed by the end of April 2026.
