Construction to Start on Front Street, Magnolia Boulevard, and Varney Street

Tunnel boring is resuming on the evening of June 1, 2026, and will continue 24/7 until June 5, 2026.

Burbank Water and Power (BWP) will be installing a tunnel bore under the railroad to support new electric lines associated with the Front Street development.

Project Update (05/27/26)

Minor work was completed in April to relocate a utility that was interfering with tunneling activity. Tunnel boring is resuming on the evening of June 1, 2026, and will continue 24/7 until June 5, 2026. Some lane closures will be required during the tunnel boring, on both Front Street and under the Magnolia Bridge in front of 10 W. Magnolia.

Additional work will be required for approximately one month afterwards to finalize construction and restore pavement.

Construction Schedule

Lane closures:

  • Temporary lane closures may occur on Front Street, the Magnolia Bridge, and in the area beneath the bridge starting on the evening of June 1, 2026, and continuing until June 5, 2026.
  • Preparatory work will continue leading up to June 1, 2026, primarily during nighttime hours.
  • Tunnel boring work will be continuous, 24 hours a day until June 5, 2026.
  • Extended lane closures (24/7) affecting the westbound magnolia feeder road underneath the magnolia bridge will go into effect on June 1 and are currently expected to conclude by June 5.
  • Additional nighttime closures will be required through the end of the month.

Traffic Impacts

Front Street

  • Front Street may be one-way traffic with flaggers intermittently during the day.
  • Certain road segment closures under the bridge that are already in place will remain until the tunnel boring is complete.
  • We will do our best to minimize street closures, but drivers should expect delays.

Magnolia feeder road (near 10 W Magnolia)

  • There will be intermittent closures of the one-way eastbound feeder road, near 10 W Magnolia until June 5, 2026.
  • Detours will be provided via Varney from Cypress, with a one-way westbound lane, and flaggers will be present to allow for two-way traffic.
  • There will be delays and parking restrictions underneath and around the Magnolia Bridge, feeder roads, and along detours.
  • Turns into N Varney St from Magnolia Bl will be prohibited during feeder road closures. Detours will be provided via Cypress Ave.
  • Detour signs will be posted.

Parking Restrictions

  • On-street parking should be restricted only if parking will be impacted by construction activities, closures, detours, or the traffic control 24/7.
  • Parking restrictions should be set up to limit the impact on on-street parking, but significant restrictions will be required in the work areas and along detours.
  • Where needed, “Temporary No Parking Anytime” signs will be posted at least 48 hours before enforcement.
