All major home appliances must meet minimum energy efficiency standards set by the Department of Energy. It's the law. Many appliances beat the standard and use even less energy. These appliances receive the Energy Star® certification for highest energy efficiency. Energy efficient appliances costs less to operate. That saves you money every month on your utility bills. Using less energy also benefits the environment by reducing air pollution and conserving natural resources.
Federal law requires a bright yellow EnergyGuide label to be placed on many types of home appliances, including refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, and clothes washers.
The EnergyGuide label is a requirement and does not necessarily indicate that the particular appliance is energy efficient.
The EnergyGuide label allows consumers to estimate how much a particular appliance will cost to operate each year and to compare this cost among similar appliances.
Energy Star®is the brand name developed by the federal government to identify high-efficiency appliances. Energy Star® appliances exceed energy-efficiency standards by 15 to 20%. This high level of energy efficiency reduces the operating cost throughout the course of the appliance's lifetime. Energy Star® appliances tend to be more expensive than less efficient models but cost less to operate. In the long run, you save money with an Energy Star® appliance.
